Duplje - Central Memorial to the Fallen Fighters, Soldiers and Internees

DESCRIPTION OF THE MEMORIAL: In the park in front of the elementary school in Sp. Dupljah, a 465 cm high obelisk made of white Istrian stone is erected. The paved area in front of the memorial measures 300 cm X 300 cm.

DESCRIPTION OF THE EVENT: In the year 1941, the village of Dupljah had already been organized into an OF by the end of June 1941. On 26th July 1941, several locals had already joined the Tržiško četo. From that point onwards, the village of Duplje was continuously connected with the partisans, especially from February to September 1942, when units of the Kokrška četa or Kokrški odred were frequently stationed in Udinboršt.

On 5th July 1941, around 20 men entered the Kokrški odred, among them almost the entire choir of the "Dupljanski zvon" choir.

Tine Teran from Duplje was the first illegal in these areas, and together with his brother Stanet, he joined the Tržiško četo on 26th July 1941.

Janez Perko joined the Tržiško četo on 26th July 1941. By the end of 1941, he was in the Cankarjev bataljon and participated in the attack on German police in Rovtah (45 police officers fell), and later in the famous Dražgoška battle, where he was wounded. From February 1942, he was in the Kokrška četa, and later in the Kokrški odred, where he was finally the commander of the unit. He led the II. bataljon of the Kokrški odred in an operation, after which the unit was destroyed in Udinboršt on 13th and 14th September 1924. In this battle, he was among the last fighters, after two days of fighting, from which there was no more escape, and he committed suicide.

Stane Pavlin, from Podbrezje, joined the Kokrška četa on 12th March 1942 and fell in the days of 21st to 22nd April 1942 in a cave. From March, he was in the Kokrška četa, and at the same time, Ivan Stroj from Podbrezje also fell in the cave.

On 5th July 1942, the following entered the Kokrški odred: Andrej Perko, Janez and Albin Brejc (brothers), Jože Černivec, Jože Pance. All of them fell in the two-day battle of the II. bataljon of the Kokrški odred in Udinboršt on 13th and 14th September 1942, or later died in prisons.

On 5th July 1942, Alojz Zupan-Peter also entered the Kokrški odred, and he fell in Goričah on 14th November 1944 as a field worker. Ignac Močnik-Miki fell on 13th April 1942 as a courier of the Kokrški odred's staff, and was killed on 20th August 1942 in Kokri.

The memorial was erected by the local committee of ZB NOB Duplje. The obelisk was designed by architect Nandeta Jocifa and was unveiled on 12th September 1965.

RKD has under number EŠD 17905 the information that the gravestones of the fallen in the Second World War are on the cemetery near the church of St. Vida in the village, but such marked graves on the cemetery cannot be found. -- mh 20. 10. 2017
