Ten who was hanged, Vrhpolje

Memorial to ten hanged partisans is marked by nine wild chestnut trees and a memorial plaque on the façade of building no. 43a near the church.

At the end of September 1943, the Gradnik Brigade was returning from Dolenjska and Notranjska
and suffered a major German attack at Blažon on Nanos, in which 12 fighters were captured
among them a nurse. The Germans took them to Vrhpolje and hanged them on the chestnut trees near the church.
One of them managed to escape.
The grave of the hanged fighters is on the cemetery. It was arranged on 22. 7. 1961.

On the church courtyard, nine wild chestnut trees grow from the ten that were directly connected to the war crime and thus one of the rare preserved authentic memorials in the community of Vipava. On 27. September 1943, the Germans hanged ten partisans of the Gradnik Brigade on these chestnut trees, captured at Blažon on Nanos. Of the ten partisans, three were locals. Due to the very event, these chestnut trees mean much more to the Vrhpoljčans than for what they were planted. The chestnut trees are generally well-grown and healthy and create a pleasant atmosphere on the square. The chestnut trees are protected by an ordinance on the proclamation of chestnut trees at the parish church as a historical memorial.
