He entered NOV on 18 May 1942, and in the same November he became a member of KPS. In NOV, he held various command duties (commander of the battalion in Šercerjeva brigade, later deputy commander in Bračičeva brigade, commander of the Koroška group of detachments, and deputy commander of the XIV. division) until the march of the 14th division to Styria, in which he participated as deputy commander of the 13th Bračičeva brigade. He particularly distinguished himself in the battles on Paški Kozjak on 18 February 1944 and in the five-day battles of the Koroška group of detachments (he was the commander) against the Germans in August 1944 in the area of Črna. For this action, his units were praised by Marshal Aleksander, the commander of the Allied forces in the Mediterranean. As commander of the 14th division, he led the attack on the German home defense post in Blagovica on 7 November 1944, where he was seriously wounded and died the same day. He was named a national hero on 9 May 1954.

The memorial plaque is on the birthplace house, Čatež no. 4; according to the design of Jožet Zamljena-Drejčet, with a verse inscription, unveiled on 1 May 1951. A statue of his companion stands at the House of Koroški Partisans in Solčava.
