HISTORICAL MEMORIAL
The beginning of organized medical care for the wounded and sick in the Kočevski Rog area dates back to July 1942. At that time, Dr. Pavel Lunaček – Igor in the Auersperg hunting lodge on Daleč hrib arranged the first partisan hospital, or rather, a sanitary post, number 1.
He equipped it with iron beds, blankets and bedding from the Topliška spa house and sanitary materials obtained from Ljubljana. The first wounded were admitted in the second half of June 1942. The hospital was designated for seriously wounded individuals. Gradually, it began to be called Centralna.
The manager was Dr. Pavel Lunaček – Igor, and the assistant was Dr. Božena Ravnikar – Nataša. There were also two nurses and three women in the kitchen. For economic matters, Jože Ivančič took care of them, and the political commissar was Dr. Andrej Župančič – Mike.
During the Roško offensive, the Italian army discovered and burned the hospital on Daleč hrib on 16 August 1942. The following day, they also discovered and burned the hidden ammunition depot. Earlier, they had burned the Auersperg villa on Podstenicah, where the partisan ambulance was operating. All the wounded and staff had previously retreated to a hidden cellar and survived the offensive without any casualties, although the Italian soldiers carefully searched the area around the forestry lodge.
About 600 meters away from the hospital in the Auersperg hunting lodge on Daleč hrib, they built another hidden ammunition depot (COORDINATES N45°42'38,08" N, 15°02'7,87" E), which had a common shelter for about 32 people. Today, traces of digging and fragments of glass and metal are still visible.
The depot was built in close proximity to a spring that never dries up. Thus, the wounded and staff were supplied with high-quality drinking water.
After the war, the Forestry Economy of Novo Mesto on the highland built a forestry lodge.
The Roško offensive and the burning of the hospital on Daleč hrib are also mentioned by the partisan – writer Edvard Kocbek, whose wife was among the patients on Daleč hrib, in his work TOVARIŠIJA.
