Barium, Italy, Establishment of 4th Marine Brigade, Italy

The beginnings of establishing the first units that later became part of the 4th Oversea Brigades date back to October 1943. At the beginning of 1944, in addition to our naval base in Monopoli, a working battalion was established, which performed various tasks in the nearby bay. Similarly, this was also the case at the airport in Brindisi and the airport in Bari, where there were two working detachments: one preparing transportation at the Anglo-American airfield, while the other prepared transportation for the Soviet base at the Bari airport. Since their work was interrelated, it became necessary to have a common military and political leadership. Therefore, on September 7, 1944, the NOVJ base staff in Bari established the 4th Oversea Brigade from these units. Shortly after the establishment of this brigade, another battalion was set up. When Soviet representatives withdrew their base from Bari in December 1944 and moved to Zemun, the brigade underwent further restructuring.
