Čekovnik, Plaque of the village's commemoration and merits of the inhabitants during NOB

A plaque at Podobnik's home in Čekovnik was unveiled on 25 June 2023 in memory of the 80th anniversary of the burning of the village and the contribution of the locals during the national liberation struggle.

The village was burned by Italian soldiers on 23 June 1943 as retaliation for the attack on a fascist unit in Razor near Vojsko. They destroyed three homes, sent over 20 men and women into internment, and burned a quarter of the village.

Already in 1942, the first organizers of resistance on the Primorska coast began to be announced, with Janko Premrle – Vojko – at their head. Vojko was mortally wounded in February 1943 during a battle in the Idrijca valley near Čekovnik.

Help and reliability of the locals from Čekovnik and other nearby settlements enabled the establishment of an organized partisan ambulance station in this area already in 1943, and the operation of the partisan hospital Pavla. Of the total thirteen most significant locations, only a few kilometers of air line across the Idrijca valley, from July 1944, the hospital operated under Hudim field above Krekovši, the central post (named Zadnja centrala) with 9 huts and all necessary equipment, even with a small hydroelectric plant. By spring 1945, they also set up a department for the disabled in Čekovnik.

Human losses during the national liberation struggle were also significant. Of the 340 residents of Čekovnik, over 30 lost their lives.

As part of the ceremony during the unveiling of the plaque, Marija Žgavec and Aleksander Mohorič, who were children at the time and witnessed the burning of their home, together with Borut Pahor, planted a tree of remembrance – a pear tree, as a symbol of humanity and as a symbol of the expectation of warm human relationships.
