Partisan Memorial at St. Johann Cemetery in Rosental/Šentjanž v Rožu

The partisans of the Western Carinthian Front maintained several outposts in the Rosental. On 10 November 1944, an SS unit attacked a bunker at the Rabenberg above St. Johann and killed Terezija Malle, Mihael Brumnik and Egidij Hafner. Hafner lived in the nearby farm vlg. Lapš. Already on 30 October 1944, Janez Vester also died at the Rabenberg; his grave is located at the entrance to the cemetery. At the Rabenberg, there is a separate memorial dedicated to the fallen. Franc Vavče died on the nearby Singerberg on 28 August 1944. Toni Lesičnik died on 3 November 1944; his name was added later. In 1970, the partisan association erected a memorial site in the furthest part of the cemetery, centrally in front of the wall, replacing the provisional graves. This consists of a marble obelisk, two stone blocks and a plaque already present on the wall. Seven cuboid-shaped trees symbolize, since a renovation in 2015, the memory of the six fallen and of the priest Janez Hornböck, whose grave is also located in the cemetery.
